Every time you get behind the wheel and travel down the highways and byways throughout the nation, you are subjected to conditions and road hazards that could present a problem. Additionally, no matter how careful and safe you are as a driver – no matter how much you pay attention to other vehicles and the road – not everyone does the same. Other drivers can be responsible for your involvement in road incidents and accidents.
If you’ve ever driven next to a semi-truck you already know how scary it can feel. The thing is, we have to share the road with large trucks. It’s unavoidable. Whether they are drifting in and out of lanes, move over without checking their blind spot, or something else entirely, you must be ready and alert at all times to, hopefully, avoid colliding with them or ending up in a ditch.
In no way, shape, or form are we discrediting 18-wheeler operators. Many of them are some of the most skillful, careful drivers on the road. But things happen.
Let’s look at some of the things that you, as an average driver, can do to protect yourself against colliding with a big rig.
Though you hope a semi-truck driver sees you, you can’t always make that assumption. To compensate for the size of their trailer and truck, wide turns need to be made by the drivers of semis. So that they can complete their turn, allow them plenty of room. Don’t assume they see you even if you see them attempting a turn. Don’t pass while they are turning. Don’t settle in alongside them, and don’t try to squeeze in next to them or behind them.
Use Caution When Passing
It’s okay to pass a semi-truck, but you must always proceed with caution. Consider the space you would ordinarily allow when passing a standard car and allow much more. You don’t want to place the driver of the truck in a compromising position, so in your rearview mirror, make sure you can clearly see the truck before you move in front of it. Before you pass an 18-wheeler, do your best to make sure they see you. You might be able, in their side mirror, to notice whether or not you make eye contact with the driver.
Don’t Chance It
Any time you’re driving in the vicinity of a large vehicle, think twice before taking any chances. Do not speed up if you notice the truck is veering toward your lane. Let them over by slowing down. Other vehicles may be able to stop quickly, but not so much with large trucks. If you cut in front of them after speeding up, they could well collide with you when you decide to hit the brakes.
Driving Near a Semi-Truck/Trailer
Safe driving requires two main elements: awareness and patience. Where the prospect of sharing the road with large vehicles and semis is concerned, this is particularly the case.
